For many people with cerebral palsy and their families, organising a holiday is an intimidating minefield. There are just so many elements to consider: will the flight staff be used to catering for those with limited mobility? Will the hotel sufficiently accommodate wheelchairs, or those with walking difficulties? Will there be enough activities within the vicinity that cater for wobbly walkers, slow walkers, or wheelchair users? Will there be experienced, friendly, reliable staff on hand to offer advice and local knowledge?
In 2004, travel industry expert Lynne Kirby realised how beneficial it would be for people with conditions such as cerebral palsy to be able to have a helping hand with their holiday bookings from a reliable company dedicated to the needs of people with mobility issues. This seed of an idea became Enable Holidays.
Lynne envisioned a company that helped its mobility-limited customers to travel far and wide across the globe with ease, visiting the whole of Europe, out to exotic Asia, and across the Atlantic to the bombast of the good old U.S. of A.
From the very offset of Enable Holidays, the team were determined to do things differently from mainstream operators. Enable’s directors wanted to remove as many of the risks as possible for its customers by always having on hand the most detailed information relating to accessibility, facilities and suitability of holiday destinations. The only way to be certain this was the case was to personally visit 100s of prospective hotels to check their suitability, as well as to join forces with airports, airlines and other service providers to communicate customers’ needs and establish trusting relationships.
Through Enable Holidays’ unique auditing system, which covers over 140 points, the company became the first UK tour operator to be accredited for its competence in auditing the suitability of overseas accommodation for people with mobility impairments such as cerebral palsy. Now, 12 years on, the Enable team have travelled hundreds of thousands of miles to create the company’s current portfolio of over 250 properties in over 30 destinations worldwide.
With an ever-growing list of properties and global reach, Enable Holidays will take the stress out of organising your accessible holiday.
