Audiobooks are the perfect way for children
and adults with cerebral palsy to engage.
Listening Books is a UK charity that provides a postal and internet based audiobook service for some 36,000 people that would struggle to read printed books due conditions like cerebral palsy. Listening to audiobooks can be a fantastic way for those with cerebral palsy to experience great books that they otherwise might find difficult to read. For those who struggle to hold a book, have learning difficulties or trouble focusing when reading, audiobooks are a hassle-free way to keep up-to-date with new releases by favourite authors, expand their knowledge with non-fiction or listen to treasured classics.
The charity was founded in 1959 by Norma Skemp after a serious car accident in 1954 caused her to virtually lose her sight. When she applied to another charity for help, she found that they could not assist her because she could still “see something”. Norma immediately recognised a gap in provision for people with disabilities and she set up Listening Books, her aim to provide a service for people with a full range of print impairments.
Listening Books have over 7000 audiobooks in their library for both adults and children, including titles by authors such as Philippa Gregory, Lee Child, Cecilia Ahern, Terry Pratchett and Michael Morpurgo. There are also a number of educational audiobooks and titles on the national curriculum which are a great benefit to our younger members who require extra help with school work.
Audiobooks can prove quite expensive to buy, but Listening Books offers a low cost subscription to their library service where members can have MP3 CDs delivered straight to their front door or can choose to listen to titles online via internet streaming or downloading.
Service support is available from Listening Books from a dedicated library team for infrequent computer users or those that lack confidence when navigating the internet. If you or someone you know would be interested in joining the service, please call the library team on 020 7407 9417
email firstname.lastname@example.org or visit
Subscriptions start from as little as £20 per year but we are sometimes able to help people who would find the fee a barrier to joining the service.
'The companionship and delight of a voice telling stories is incomparable. Listening
Books distributes pure, undiluted
pleasure and friendship. Not many
schemes can make such a claim.'
