Having cerebral palsy does not automatically entitle someone to a particular benefit.
Eligibility usually depends on factors such as age, care needs, mobility, ability to carry out everyday activities, income or ability to work.
However, several forms of financial support may be relevant.
Disability Benefits for Children
In England and Wales, children under 16 with additional care or mobility needs may qualify for Disability Living Allowance (DLA).
Scotland uses Child Disability Payment instead, while Northern Ireland has its own DLA arrangements.
Our Disability Living Allowance page explains DLA for children in more detail.
Support for Adults
Depending on age and circumstances, adults may be able to claim disability or sickness-related benefits such as Personal Independence Payment (PIP) or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA).
Universal Credit can also include additional amounts in some circumstances.
The benefits system changes, so check current government guidance before applying. GOV.UK currently lists PIP, ESA, DLA for children and disability-related Universal Credit support among the principal options.
Support for Carers
People providing substantial unpaid care may qualify for financial support such as Carer's Allowance or Carer's Credit, depending on eligibility.
Other support may be available through the local authority.
Help with Housing and Adaptations
Disabled people may qualify for assistance with adaptations to their home.
Our Housing Support page explains some of the options available.
Check Everything You May Be Entitled To
Receiving one benefit can sometimes affect entitlement to another or unlock additional assistance.
Use an up-to-date benefits calculator or seek specialist welfare-rights advice if you are unsure.
Do not assume that a cerebral palsy diagnosis alone determines entitlement; the assessment normally considers how the condition affects the individual.
