Appointments can cover a lot of information in a short time. A little preparation can make it easier to explain what matters, remember the advice you receive and agree what happens next.
Before the appointment
Write down your main questions and put the most important first. Note any changes in movement, comfort, communication, sleep, eating, mood or daily activities. Bring an up-to-date list of medicines, equipment and professionals involved. If forms, letters, photographs or short videos help explain a concern, ask whether you can bring them.
During the appointment
It is reasonable to ask for unfamiliar terms to be explained in plain language. Check what the options are, what the likely benefits and drawbacks may be, and whether a decision is needed immediately. Ask who will arrange referrals, prescriptions or follow-up appointments. You can take notes or bring someone you trust, subject to the service’s arrangements.
Afterwards
Keep letters and action points together. Record who you should contact if circumstances change. If you are unsure about the plan, contact the service rather than guessing. For urgent medical concerns, use the appropriate NHS service.
