Carer Support

Caring for somebody with cerebral palsy can involve practical, emotional and financial responsibilities.

If you provide unpaid care, support may be available for you as well as for the person you care for.

What Support Can Carers Receive?

Depending on circumstances and location, help may include:

  • a carer's assessment
  • financial support
  • practical services
  • respite or short breaks
  • workplace rights
  • local carer groups
  • advice and information.

GOV.UK identifies Carer's Allowance, Carer's Credit, flexible working and carer's leave among areas of support relevant to unpaid carers.

Carer's Assessments

A carer's assessment considers how caring affects your life and what support might help.

It can cover areas such as your wellbeing, work, education and ability to continue caring.

Contact your local authority to find out about the assessment arrangements where you live.

Financial Support

Some carers may qualify for Carer's Allowance or other financial assistance.

Eligibility rules apply and receiving one benefit can sometimes affect another, so seek up-to-date advice about your circumstances.

Looking After Your Own Health

Caring can be physically and emotionally demanding.

Your own health matters.

Attend your own healthcare appointments and seek help if caring responsibilities are affecting your physical health, sleep or emotional wellbeing.

You Are Still a Parent, Partner or Family Member

Caring responsibilities can sometimes dominate relationships.

Where possible, accessing appropriate outside support can create more space for your relationship with the person beyond practical care.

Asking for assistance does not diminish the support you provide. Sustainable care includes recognising the needs of the carer as well as those of the person receiving care.
