Cerebral palsy is lifelong. Although much information about the condition focuses on children, adults with cerebral palsy can have changing healthcare, practical and personal needs throughout life.
Does Cerebral Palsy Change in Adulthood?
The original brain problem does not progressively worsen.
However, its effects on the body can change with age.
Some adults experience changes involving pain, fatigue, mobility, muscles or joints. Regular healthcare remains important, particularly when symptoms change.
Healthcare as an Adult
Moving from paediatric to adult healthcare can involve changes in services and professionals.
Keep useful medical information and know who to contact about ongoing concerns.
Do not assume a new symptom is automatically caused by cerebral palsy. New or worsening health problems should receive appropriate medical assessment.
Independent Living
Adults with cerebral palsy live in many different ways.
Some live entirely independently. Others use personal assistance, family support or supported accommodation.
Equipment, home adaptations and assistive technology can help people have greater control over daily life.
Work and Education
Cerebral palsy does not prevent someone from having a career or continuing their education.
Some people require workplace adjustments or support, while others do not.
Our Jobs and Career Opportunities page explains this in more detail.
Relationships and Social Life
Friendships, relationships, sexuality and family life are normal parts of adulthood.
Physical disability can create practical considerations, but assumptions should not be made about someone's ability or desire to form relationships.
Making Support Work for You
Good adult support should respond to the person's priorities rather than treating cerebral palsy as the whole of their identity.
Healthcare, equipment and assistance are tools for enabling people to live the lives they choose.
