Disability Living Allowance for Children with Cerebral Palsy

Disability Living Allowance, or DLA, can help with the additional costs of caring for a disabled child.

Disability Living Allowance, or DLA, can help with the additional costs of caring for a disabled child.

For children with cerebral palsy, entitlement depends on their individual care and mobility needs rather than the diagnosis itself.

Who Can Claim DLA?

DLA for children applies to eligible children under 16 in England and Wales.

Broadly, the child's condition must mean they need substantially more looking after than a child of the same age without a disability or have difficulties getting around. Other eligibility requirements also apply.

Children in Scotland use Child Disability Payment instead, while Northern Ireland has separate DLA arrangements.

Care and Mobility Components

DLA has two components:

Care component – based on the level of additional care or supervision required.

Mobility component – based on mobility needs.

A child may qualify for one or both.

Different rates apply according to the level of need. Because benefit rates change, always check current government information rather than relying on older figures.

Completing a DLA Application

When completing the form, explain what your child actually needs help with.

Think about:

  • dressing and personal care
  • eating and drinking
  • moving around
  • supervision
  • communication
  • therapy or treatment
  • support during the night.

Comparing your child's needs with those of a non-disabled child of the same age can be helpful because young children naturally require significant care.

Supporting Evidence

Relevant evidence might include medical reports, therapy assessments or information from other professionals involved with your child.

Evidence should demonstrate the child's actual needs rather than simply confirming their diagnosis.

What Happens at 16?

In England and Wales, a child receiving DLA will generally be invited to apply for Personal Independence Payment when they turn 16.

Benefit rules can change, so check GOV.UK or seek benefits advice for the latest requirements before making a claim.
